Early 20th century American Novelist, Willa Cather wrote in her novel, O Pioneers, “There are only two or three human stories, and they go on repeating themselves as fiercely as if they had never happened before; like the larks in this country, that have been singing the same five notes over for thousands of years.” This would also be an apt description of traditional song, which is by and large, about the human condition. The most enduring themes in the traditional song canon seem to be of relationship and love (returned or unrequited), parting and love of homeland, life and death…..These elements of life affect us profoundly and that is why we sing about them…that is why we can relate to them and like to hear them, even hundreds of years later…..The universality of the human experience in these songs are what continue to beguile me.
I have also included “Summertime”, an American standard. Though it doesn’t fit in the traditional canon, there is a timelessness about the song that made me want to include it.
This recording was done in a few short sessions during my last weeks as a Chicago resident, late summer of 2007. I was blessed to work with some of the best musicians on the scene. Michael Kirkpatrick, my duo partner, put on his producer’s hat for this project and called on a few of our friends to help us create, “The Chicago Sessions”. We’re proud of this recording and hope you like it!
